Adjunct ASL Faculty Position

The ASL Studies program at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, invites applications for an adjunct instructor of American Sign Language. Quality and dedicated teaching are a top priority, and we seek enthusiastic adjunct faculty members who are committed to teaching excellence and supporting students in an effective and inclusive learning environment.  For Fall 2026, we have the following adjunct position 

ASLN 1101 Elementary American Sign Language I (first level of ASL), Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:40 PM 

This course is one of 10 sections and will be taught in person and at the Storrs campus. All sections follow the Signing Naturally curriculum which is designed and delivered through HuskyCT (Blackboard), including the use of GoReact for related assignments and assessments.  Instructional support for both GoReact and the Signing Naturally curriculum is available if needed. The first day of the semester is August 31st, 2026 The last day of the semester is December 11th, 2026, with final exams the following week (TBD).

Responsibilities: 

  • Teach one section of ASLN 1101 Elementary American Sign Language I 
  • Deliver instruction using Signing Naturally curriculum, Units 1-6, including best practices in ASL pedagogy and Deaf-centered approaches 
  • Evaluate student performance using GoReact  
  • Maintain regular and prompt communication with students and members of the ASL team 
  • Use HuskyCT/Ultra (Blackboard) for course materials 
  • Submit grades in accordance with university policies 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  •  A master’s degree 
  • At least two semesters experience teaching ASL at the college level 
  • Native or near native fluency in ASL 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture and history 
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications including Blackboard (Ultra) 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Six semesters of experience teaching ASL at the college level. 
  • Experience with Signing Naturally curriculum. 
  • Experience with GoReact. 
  • Active participation in the Deaf community. 
  • ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview) 4 or higher.  
  • SLPI (Sign Language Proficiency Interview) Advanced Plus. 
  • ASLTA (American Sign Language Teacher Association) Teacher Certification. 

Appointment Terms: This is a temporary position for one semester, with the possibility of extension depending on program needs and available funding.  

Compensation:  $2,062 per credit, $8,248 per course (ASLN 1101 is a 4-credit course).

  5. Two letters of recommendations, either in English or ASL (YouTube link preferred) with the following information:    
    • Recommenders contact information and position  
    • How long they have known you  
    • A statement about your qualifications and success in teaching ASL  
    • Be no more than 1 page in length (English) or 5 minutes in ASL.  
    • Created no earlier than September 1, 2024.  

Once all documents have been received, each application will be reviewed by members of the ASL Studies program. If selected, the candidate will be contacted to schedule an interview to be held either in person or remotely.
